Vasili Arkhipov was a Soviet naval officer who’s lauded for single-handedly averting a nuclear confrontation during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In many ways, he’s the perfect Oddball, except it may be more complicated than one man saving the world in a moment of decisive action.
Depending on which account you read, an inanimate object may have done just as much to avert the crisis as Arkhipov. Although it most likely had an OddShapeⓇ and could be worth a profile of its own (new newsletter dropping soon😂). Arkhipov received a posthumous award for what he did, so it was important. I’m just not certain of the facts and what – if any – lessons there are.
All of that is to say, I want to do more research and talk to some people who’ve studied the first-hand accounts. So I’m shifting Oddballs to a monthly send. I want more time to explore dead ends and not have to force something that doesn’t fit or rush an idea that needs more time to breathe.
See y’all at 7:17 p.m. on Sunday, Apr. 14th.
